This year marks the entry into force of the new regulation on the use of plastic bags in Montreal and in several other municipalities in Quebec.

What you need to know for Montreal merchants:

- The regulation came into effect on January 1, but a grace period is granted until June 5, 2018.

- The regulation affects both standard bags of less than 50 microns and biodegradable bags.

- Are not affected by the regulations: Bag for fruits & vegetables / nuts / meat used for hygiene purposes and bags for cleaners' clothes.

- The amount of fines for non-compliance with the rules vary from $200 to $4000
